Beyond Angkor: Cambodia's Secret Temples
Angkor gets all the attention — and rightly so. But Cambodia is home to hundreds of ancient temples scattered across the country, many of them rarely visited, overgrown with jungle, and breathtakingly atmospheric.
If you want to experience the magic of Khmer architecture without the crowds, these are the temples worth seeking out.

Beng Mealea
Located about 70 kilometres east of Siem Reap, Beng Mealea is the temple that Ta Prohm wishes it could be. Almost entirely swallowed by jungle, with massive trees growing through collapsed stone galleries and corridors disappearing into the undergrowth, this temple feels like a true discovery.
Unlike Ta Prohm, Beng Mealea receives a fraction of the visitors — giving you the rare experience of wandering through ancient ruins in near-silence.
Getting there: 1.5 hours from Siem Reap by tuk-tuk or car. Best combined with a day trip to Koh Ker.

Koh Ker
Once the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period in the 10th century, Koh Ker is now a remote archaeological site 120 kilometres from Siem Reap. The centrepiece is Prasat Thom — a seven-tiered pyramid temple rising 30 metres above the jungle canopy.
The climb is steep and the view from the top is extraordinary. The site covers a large area with over 40 smaller temples to explore.
Getting there: 2.5 hours from Siem Reap. Best visited on a full-day tour.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Preah Vihear
Perched dramatically on a cliff on the Cambodian-Thai border, Preah Vihear is one of the most spectacularly situated temples in Southeast Asia. The approach follows a long causeway climbing up the Dangrek Mountains, revealing the temple in stages.
The views from the top stretch for hundreds of kilometres across the Cambodian plains below. It is UNESCO-listed and largely unknown to most Western travellers.
Getting there: 5 hours from Siem Reap — best as an overnight trip.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Banteay Chhmar
One of the largest temple complexes of the Angkor period, Banteay Chhmar sits in a remote corner of northwestern Cambodia, rarely visited by tourists. The carvings here — including rare multi-armed Avalokiteshvara figures — are among the finest in Cambodia.
A community-based tourism project in the nearby village means your visit directly supports local families.
Getting there: 4 hours from Siem Reap near the Thai border.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Sambor Prei Kuk
One of the oldest temple complexes in Southeast Asia, predating Angkor by centuries. Located near Kampong Thom, these 7th-century temples are scattered through a forest of ancient trees, giving the site a magical, otherworldly atmosphere.
UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 — still rarely visited.
Getting there: 2.5 hours from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.

Tips for Off-the-Beaten-Path Temple Visits
Hire a local guide — remote temples have no signage; a guide is essential
Start early — heat and distance make morning starts crucial
Bring your own food and water — no facilities at remote sites
Rent a car or motorbike — tuk-tuks struggle on longer distances
Respect the sites — many remote temples are still active places of worship

The greatest temples in Cambodia are not always the most famous ones. Sometimes the most powerful experiences are found in the silence of the jungle, alone with ancient stone.
